I chose the painting, Olympia by Edouard Manet. This painting sparked a lot of controversy seeing it was based off of Titian's famous painting Venus of Urbino. Instead of painting a Goddess like Venus Manet painted a prostitute. The confrontational gaze mixed with the wealthy gifts from her clients shocked audiences at the 1865 Paris Salon. I know most of my group members have taken some Art History courses.
